Risky Business by @m_cutler

He prowled to the table, narrow eyed, and braced his hands on it, leaning toward her. “Have you ever seen a hungry bear? Because they don’t throw tantrums. They devour.”
She mimicked his pose, leaning in, getting in his face. “Are you going to devour me?” The second the words crossed her lips, her cheeks heated.
Stop thinking about that, Allison. For real, this time.
If she hadn’t been his employer and fresh off a messy divorce, and if she hadn’t been only a month done with breastfeeding and barely back to feeling like her body was her own—and if Theo didn’t hate her for claiming ownership of Cloud Nine—she would have welcomed a good, old-fashioned devouring, the kind she’d always imagined she deserved, if only the world were a more perfect place and men weren’t such insufferable assholes.

The sexual tension between Theo and Allison was scorching.  I love love/hate romances as long as the move from hate to love is realistic.  In this case it definitely was.  I feasted off every one of their interactions and the drunk flirting between them in the bar had me fanning myself.   Oh and the bike ride <3.

Hot relationship aside, I really admire the author for basing her Melissa Cutler - Theosport romance series around a team of wounded veterans and not shying away from dealing with heroes with disabilities. It really adds another depth to the story.  Theo, Will, Brandon, Duke, Liam ….. what a bunch of awesome guys.  I loved the way they all had Allison’s back, especially Will for going after Theo when he thought his friend had broken her heart.  I love the ladies in the book too, and the way they were so accepting of Allison and Katie.

So why did this awesome book lose one star?  Whilst I have to hand it to Allison for being blunt and honest about it, the fact that she admitted marrying her ex-husband just so she could have a comfortable life and be a stay-at-home Mum did make my support of her waver a bit.  I wished she had more confidence in herself to want more than that, even after the trauma of nearly drowning.

Anyway, I can’t wait for more in this series. I am especially looking forward to Brandon/Harper’s story.

The Devil in Denim by Melanie Scott

The Devil in Denim (New York Saints, #1)3.5*

The set-up of the book was unique in that nearly all sport romance series focus on the players whereas Melanie Scott has chosen to focus on Alex, Lucas and Mal, 3 baseball fans who bought the struggling Saints team.

This book focused on Alex and Maggie, the former team owner’s daughter who has had the carpet swept out from under her with the sale of ‘her’ team to Alex.

I liked the plot on principle but whilst Alex/Maggie were likeable, the first two-thirds of the book seemed to drag on and on with not a lot happening apart from Maggie resolutely stating that she wouldn’t get involved with her boss one minute and taking her clothes off the next.  And repeating this cycle multiple times.

Where the book really started to pick up was in the last quarter Melanie Scott - Alexxwhen a rival makes a bid for the team and Maggie has to decide where her loyalties lie.  When news of her (now over) relationship with Alex gets out, she and Alex have to pretend to be madly enough.  I think this could have been expanded on and made for more interesting scenes.

The book has a satisfying ending in the main but I feel like there were some threads that were never tied up i.e. the relationship between Maggie and her father – I still felt like he was hiding something from her; and Maggie/Ollie – I kind of felt this was introduced but never went anywhere.

Still, I’ll be tuning in for the next book in the series.

Her Special Forces by Sophia Roslyn

Her Special ForcesReceived an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

I actually really liked the first chapter or so and had high hopes for this book.

Then Nathan/Kacey started having a lot of sex and the way those scenes were written made me simultaneously laugh and cringe.  For example:

Hands lewdly fondled, then lifted, her ass. He’d settled the gateway of her womanhood over his cockhead, slowly lowering her onto his shaft.
“Omigod, Nathan, oh baby, yesss—” Her words had ended in a passionate hiss.

He slammed into her one last time, stiffened, then she felt him pulsing inside, his cockhead jammed so tightly against the mouth of her womb that it caused her pain.  If she could get pregnant, he definitely would have just
done the deed. The notion brought forth another round of throbs as her sex responded to his deep, baby-making

And all the pet names for each other: dear, sweetheart, and my absolute favourite, dear heart seemed out of place, especially since they had only slept together once before and really didn’t know each other that well.  I was so tired of the Nathan/Kacey as a whole, especially at the end where he kept pushing and she kept pushing him away and yet he just kept coming back ….

Onto the plot itself …. weak.  And Gemma, wow Gemma.  Say hello to the world’s first superhuman 11 year-old.  She doesn’t blink twice at being abducted and then rescued by a near-death Marine in danger of plummeting them both to their death.  She can patch up a dying woman, drive a car cross-country, understand Russian, remember a multitude of little details that adult eye-witnesses wouldn’t be able to …. get my drift?  It wasn’t remotely believable.  A bit like everything else in this book.

Nikita: 4×06 – Canceled

I am a massive Nikita fan but I have to say that I never really got into the final season.

I don’t know whether it was because they tried to cram too much into too short a time, the fear that everyone was a double or the fact that Nikita/Alex were apart for five out of six episodes but it didn’t feel like the awesome show I’d known from previous seasons.

I also don’t feel Michael/Nikita ever properly dealt with the fact that she left him at the end of last season.

However, I do think the finale was fitting.  I am going to be honest, I did really think that Nikita had gone off the rails for a bit until I put two and two together.  I think the final scene with Nikita/Amanda was especially clever.

I like how flashbacks to Nikita’s first day at Division were used and I am glad that they all (apart from Ryan) got their Happy Ever After (although how comes Sonya was basically absent from the finale?!).

Overall though this season was lacking the Nikita magic that I had come to love.  However, the first season will always hold its place in my heart as one of the best seasons of television drama ever.

“Hey. Sorry about losing you.”

“You didn’t lose me. I left.”

That she did. “Can I come in?”

She hesitated a moment. “Uh, sure.” She stepped aside and he entered the large room with an ocean view. The sliding French door was open, and the gravitational pull of the beach led him to the patio.

“Nice view,” he said over his shoulder.

“It really is. This is the nicest place I’ve ever stayed at. Not that I’ve stayed in very many places.” She came up beside him, and her cinnamon sugar scent teased him.

He wanted to taste her. Eat her up. “Is this your first time seeing the ocean, too?”

“Yes,” she whispered like she was embarrassed about it. “And I’m sorry I didn’t tell you that before our lesson the other day.”

“No apology necessary. I’m pretty impressed you did what you did.”

“Really?” Delight wiped out her shame, coaxing big-ass smiles out of them both.

“You’re a lot tougher than you look.” He turned his head toward the ocean, afraid that if he looked only at her, he’d do something stupid. Bikini-clad women dotted the beach, but not one sparked his interest like the woman next to him. Especially now that pink colored her cheeks. He wanted to take her full bottom lip between his teeth, kiss her, slip his tongue inside her mouth, and once he’d had his fill, lick his way down her body until—

“What about you?” She curled up on one of the cushioned patio chairs.

“What about me?” He took the other seat, stretching his legs out and situating himself for an easy view of the beach through the iron slats of the patio railing.

“How would people describe you?”

Her question drew his undivided attention. “Depends on who you ask.” He smirked. “Women and men have very different opinions of me.” The sun glittered off her auburn hair, casting a radiant halo. “All good, mind you.”

She rolled her eyes. “Do you ever get tired of it?”

“The fame. Being recognized everywhere you go. Having to always wear a certain image.”

His heart beat a little faster. The image he shared with the world was far from the guy his family and close friends knew. He got the feeling from Sophie’s warm, interested eyes that she really wanted to know what made him tick. In his world, women only wanted to know how to get in his board shorts, so it took him a minute to process her curiosity.

And damn if it didn’t bother him that she apparently didn’t want in his pants.

Convicted by Dee Tenorio

ConvictedReceived an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Woah, this book was simultaneously crazy H-O-T and pretty dark for a romance.

I absolutely loved Cade/Katrina.  Their chemistry could light their little corrupt town on fire.  I think the ‘forbidden fruit’ element only served to increase the sexual tension between them and you could really feel the sparks flying.  Katrina’s sexy one-liners were probably my favourite thing about the book.

I liked the plot of Katrina being undercover and not being able to Dee Tenorio - Cadereveal her true identity to Cade.   The minor relationship of Rick/Shana made my heartbreak, especially when they’re mentioned in the epilogue (any chance they could get their own book and their own HEA?!).

There’s a fair bit of violence in the book what with it being set in the world of bikers but not to fear, the good guys win at the end.

Light Up the Night by @mlbuchman

Wow.  I have previously read the first book in the Night Stalkers series and you bet your ass that after reading this, I am going to go back and catch up on the previous books before Michael’s story is released.

Bill/Tricia had explosive chemistry from the start and I loved seeing their relationship develop.  The chapters when they were both on leave and on home soil were especially revealing and poignant.  Loved the Trish/Michael and Michael/Bill dynamic as well.

Hot romance aside, I am bowled over by the amount of research M.L. Buchman must have done to write this series.  I am not one to judge if it is all accurate or not but it certainly feels authentic and I felt fully immersed in the military world.

Huge kudos to the author for creating a world with so many kickass women in the military.

The Heart’s Game by Crista McHugh

The Heart's Game (Kelly Brothers, #4)Received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

I have liked the other books in this series but my issue with this book mainly lay with the subject matter: girl agrees to surrogate for her brother, has sex after the insemination process, meets up with one-night stand again, guy learns she’s pregnant and thinks the baby is his as girl doesn’t clarify and when it all unravels, guy is remarkably supportive.

Yes I know that Jenny did tell Dan that the baby wasn’t his just as he was falling asleep but the fact that she didn’t have a frank discussion about the circumstances of her pregnancy was mind-boggling, especially since he introduced her to his parents and she let them believe that the baby was his.  It was just so selfish.

I have to hand it to Dan: after he learns the real circumstances (and that Jenny didn’t in fact sleep with the big black guy claiming to be the father), he starts berating himself for being a jerk.  I found this to be unnaturally generous of him: I think he has every right to resent her for not telling him the truth and leading him on.

As to the whole surrogacy thing to begin with, I think we really needed more background to it.  It was just launched in at the beginning and the reasons why Jenny was willing to do it and the emotions were never fully explored.  I also found it weird that they used her egg so the baby is actually half hers, and then expected her to give it up and yet remain in its life as the baby’s aunt ….  it’s such a huge ask.  And then there’s the fact that she waits until after she has the insemination done to suddenly become a loose woman and have a one night stand at Comic Con …..

It’s all just a bit too much to seem real and believable.

However, having said that the author does get kudos for exploring the world of Cosplay and Vietnamese culture, which added a unique dynamic to contemporary romance.

Trisha O’Malley rebelled against her affluent family by joining the U.S. Army’s secret helicopter regiment, the 160th SOAR. Now a Chief Warrant Officer, she found her toughest fight yet in the pilot’s seat of an MH-6M attack helicopter.

William Wallace Bruce is an undercover CIA agent who doesn’t trust the military. But when the Horn of Africa is threatened by Somali pirates, Trisha flies out to recover ships and hostages…including one very ungrateful Will. Everything about Trisha triggers his mistrust: her elusive past, her wild energy, and her proclivity for flying past safety’s edge. Even as the heat between them turns into passion’s fire, Bill and Trisha must team up to confront their pasts and survive Somalia’s pirate lords.

Trisha looked up at Billy. His narrowed eyes revealed that he was indeed totally perplexed.

It was perfectly clear to her, and she just figured out that meant she was too damn stupid to live. She shrugged to herself, feeling the warm weight of his large hands still resting on her shoulders.

Well, stupid is something I’m really good at, she had to admit to herself. With one foot she shoved the door to her cabin closed until the latch clicked. Then putting a hand on either side of his neck, Tricia pulled his face down to hers.

His hesitation didn’t last long, then the kiss became everything she remembered from the first one. Power, heat, strength.

And then it became more. When he folded his arms around her and held her tight against him as they teased each other’s lips, she was just gone.

She’d never felt such a thing before. In Billy’s arms, Tricia O’Malley felt … safe. As if someone else would take care of the world, just for awhile. That was so foreign, she almost pushed away. Then she changed her mind and leaned closer because it felt so damn good.

Trisha wished she was still wearing the stupid towel, so that she could just let it slide ever so slowly to the floor like some heart-fluttering romance heroin. But she was dressed now, so she went for plan B.

Sliding her hands down to his waist, she tugged Billy’s T-shirt free and dragged it off over his head. If she could have shredded it with her teeth, she would have.

When she reached bare skin, rather than throwing herself against it, she hesitated. A desecration of multiple scars ran across one of the most beautiful chest she ever seen. Two obvious bullet holes, one by his waist another terrifyingly near his heart. A third, old one deep on his arm, just below the shoulder — the one Ralph of Detroit had given him. Thin white lines crisscrossed as if he’d been whipped or dragged over rough ground.

And one deep line that matched the scar across his face, as if a knife had been dragged diagonally down from his ear, over his chin, then sliced him from clavicle most of the way down his ribs below one breast.

Tricia look so slowly back up to his eyes, which watched her intently from just inches away.

Awaiting her reaction.

She didn’t know what to think. She’d been all freaked out over a bullet that hadn’t even penetrated her armor. He appeared to have been tortured and clearly been close to death several times.

At her continued inspection, he shrugged slightly as if to say, “It’s who I am.”

She watched a shiver ripple over the skin as she stroked a single finger down the long line of the deep knife cut.

Then she leaned in and kissed it. The shiver turned into a soft groan that rippled across his magnificent chest.

It was the last sound they made.
