Hot on Ice: A Hockey Romance Anthology by Various

Hot on Ice: A Hockey Romance Anthology (Chicago Rebels, #.5; Station Seventeen, #1.5)ARC received from: the authors

Rating: 2.5*

The rating reflects the average rating for the anthology as a whole. Individual ratings given below.

This book almost defeated me but I was determined to get through it all so I could give it a fair review, even if it meant speed-reading and skimming a few of the stories which really didn’t work for me.

Overall, this anthology is worth buying just for the 4* reads given that a percentage of the profits are going to charity and you never know, you might discover a new favourite author.

Kimberly Kincaid – Deep Check
Love this author and the firehouse series.

Katie Kenyhercz – Bear Naked
An interesting introduction for me to the native American world and the juggling of cultures

Desiree Holt – Body Check
No consistency with the absence of the “Keeper of the Cup” and a hotshot hockey guy thinks he can get his old love back now that he is injured and finally has time for her? Ugh.

Angi Morgan – Breakaway Brook
Paranormal super powers in a contemporary romance? No thanks.

Kim Golden – Under A Midnight Sun
I am sensing a repetitive theme here ….. cocky hockey guys who, once they’ve won the cup, think they can go back to their hometown and reunite with an ex-girlfriend.

Kate Meader – In Skates Trouble
This was what I really tried this anthology for and it didn’t disappoint!
I am really looking forward to Harper’s book, the first full length novel in a new series from one of my favourite contemporary romance authors!

Misty D. Waters – Checking Yes
I’m pretty sure I read this before in this anthology ….. hockey star abandoned his childhood sweetheart when he went off to play hockey and now he wants her back …. This one just has additional family and Southern drama thrown in for good measure.

Robin Kaye – Penalty Box Blues
The hockey star who can’t even remember the girl who used to tutor him every day

Robin Covington – Free Agent
I’m usually not a fan of 1st Person POV but I enjoyed this one more than I expected to

Avery Flynn – Blade
Interesting set-up with two old acquaintances having to work together to stop the cup being stolen

Susan Scott Shelley – Making His Move
Coffee addict hooks up with a sweet girl from his childhood whilst spending more time with his sporty family.

Christi Barth – Check My Heart
Really liked the background of she being his brother’s hospice nurse and loved the chemistry between these two

Heather Long – Blocked
Hockey star helps pop princess avoid the press.

Andie J.Christopher – Full Contact
A virginity story with a difference. Really weird to see Eddie turned into some kind of bad guy though

Lena Hart – Courage
Not really interested in a story about a marriage in trouble especially when the guy is so self-involved

Nana Malone – Ransom (The Player)
A story around the size of a hockey player’s dick and the geeky classmate he lusted for from afar.

Virginia Nelson – Caged
A desperate small town girl tries very hard to get a hockey star to realise he’s in love with her by making him a plastic trophy

Xio Axelrod – The Warm Up
Flirtation on the cancer ward.

Hot for the Fireman (Boston Heat #1) by Gina L. Maxwell

Hot for the FiremanARC received from: Netgalley

Rating: 4.5*

Trope: Firefighter

Chemistry: Off the charts Scorchio

One-Sentence Summary: Firefighter Versus Therapist

Review: It’s been awhile since I’ve read a romance that gave me all sorts of tingly feels but this one certainly did it!

I loved the set up of Erik and Olivia meeting each other and not knowing that they were going to have to work together in “real life”. Erik’s persistence at getting her to go out with him was nicely mirrored in the latter half with Olivia refusing to give up on him.

Whilst I spent the first half wondering when Erik’s PTSD, the whole reason for them meeting, would come into play when it finally did, it did so in a big way. It felt so raw and real and I really felt for him.

Erik’s condition keeps him off work for the duration of the book so for those of you looking forward to a book full of sexy firefighting action, you may be a little disappointed but I am sure Maxwell has plenty of time to explore that side of things in the rest of the series

One of my favourite things about the book was undoubtedly the introduction of Dozer and Angie. I am guessing their book is up next and I, for one, absolutely can’t wait to read it. I love a good reconciliation romance.

PS. Loved the shout-out to Kate Meader’s awesome Chicago firefighting series!

Praise for Sparking the Fire, Book 3:

“The tale of hot firefighters and the women—and one man—who love them has come to an end. Meader ends this series with role playing, fierce family loyalty and multiple orgasms. The male protagonist goes through a transformation that showcases his vulnerability, insecurities, possessiveness and protectiveness. The many instances of a family sticking together through it all are more than enough to tug on the heart strings, but the steamy sex and sentimental pillow talk make this book a must-read.”

RT Book Reviews Four Star Review, Scorcher

“Can a firefighter and a movie star really make it work? Meader (Rekindle the Flame, 2015) immerses you in Wyatt’s tight-knit family of foster siblings that she’s built throughout the Hot in Chicago series, and readers will feel like part of the family in no time. Her descriptions of Chicago will leave fans wanting to travel to the Windy City and fall in love with their own firefighters.”

About Sparking the Fire, Book 3:

Heating up reading lists this Fall will be Kate Meader’s highly anticipated Sparking the Fire, the “sexy and sassy” (#1 New York Times bestselling author Jude Deveraux) steamy third novel in the Hot in Chicago series, where former lovers unexpectedly reunite for a sizzling affair that will have the director yelling, “Quiet on the set!”

Wyatt Fox, resident daredevil at Engine Company 6, needs a low key job to keep him busy while he recovers from his latest rescue stunt. Consulting on a local movie shoot should add just enough spark to his day. But then in struts Molly Cade: the woman who worked his heart over good, and then left him in the Windy City dust.

Actor Molly Cade, America’s fallen sweetheart, finally has her shot at a Hollywood comeback with a dramatic new role as a tough-as-nails firefighter that promises to propel her back into the big time. And she’s not going to let anything stand in her way—even a certain brooding, blue-eyed firefighter she’s never quite been able to forget…Their story is straight out of a script: irrepressible, spunky heroine meets taciturn, smoldering hero. But these two refuse to be typecast, and when the embers of an old love are stoked, someone is bound to get burned…

About the Author:

Kate Meader was raised on romance. An Irish girl, she started with Catherine Cookson and Jilly Cooper novels, and spiced it up with some Mills & Boon. Now based in Chicago, she writes romances of her own, where sexy contemporary alpha heroes and strong heroines match each other quip for quip. When not immersed in tales of brooding mill owners, oversexed equestrians, and men who can rock an apron or a fire hose, Kate lives on the web at katemeader.com.

Sparking The Fire by @KittyMeader

Sparking the Fire (Hot in Chicago, #3)ARC received from: Netgalley

Rating: 4.5*

Trope: Reconciliation / Firefighter romance

Chemistry: Off the charts Scorchio

One-Sentence Summary: Destiny throws a firefighter and an actress together again

Review: It seems like only a few moons ago that I first discovered Kate Meader through her Hot In The Kitchen series and here we are wrapping up her third series already!

In Sparking This Fire we get to find out the broody Wyatt’s story and the secret he has been hiding from the rest of his family, their niece! Then there’s the small matter of another secret – his past with a certain Hollywood actress Molly Cade.

Needless to say when Wyatt and Molly meet again and are forced to work together on the set of her latest film, sparks fly again and there is a lot of sneaking around whilst they are both forced to confront how they fit in each others’s worlds.kate-meader-wyatt

Meanwhile the whole of the Dempsey gang are busy creating a lot of noise and drama as you would expect, especially over the discovery that Logan had a daughter. Having them all learn to build a relationship with this new arrival certainly added another layer to the story to balance out the Wyatt/Molly romance.

I’m really sad to be leaving the Dempsey family. Meader has an irresistible way of immersing you in a world and exploring human emotions that leaves you wanting more.

Kate, I know you have a hockey series on the way but if you ever feel the need the give Dick Wolf a run for his money and expand this Chicago series to explore the world of PD and Med then I’m definitely game!

One Week to Score (Tall, Dark, and Texan #3) by @KittyMeader

One Week to Score (Tall, Dark, and Texan, #3)ARC received from: The wonderful Kate Meader herself

Rating: 4*

Trope: Brother’s best friend

Chemistry: Simmering

One-Sentence Summary: Olivia uses her brother’s best friend for his body but ends up wanting more

Review: Aaaaaand Kate Meader is back with another sexy slick read.

For those of you who read the preceding book in the series, Taking The Score, you will have already had a glimpse at Flynn and Olivia’s explosive relationship and in this book that relationship, well, explodes, both figuratively and orgasmically.

The start of the book finds Olivia drowning her sorrows at a hotel Kate Meader - Flynnbar on her wedding day after finding her fiancé in the throws of it with her maid of honour, and like any self-respecting woman in her situation, Olivia is determined to make up for lost time by having lots of one-night stands. Enter Flynn, a perfect candidate and willing to be used for his body – the only downside being the oodles of history between him and Olivia and of course the ever-present “bro-code”.

Whilst the fact that Flynn’s best friend Brody is Olivia’s brother is of course the source of some tension, Meader does what most authors do not in this trope and avoids making it the main source of conflict between the couple. That honour belongs to the fact that throughout their friendship, Olivia feels that Flynn has been blowing hot/cold and coming in and out of her life as he pleases. Now Flynn has to prove that he is here to stay.

This book is a Brazen and needless to say full of sexy, hot scenes so best avoided as a lunchtime read at work!

Love’s A State Of Mind “Taking The Score” Review HERE

A sexy category romance from Entangled’s Brazen imprint…

His office temptation is now his full-blown fantasy…

Paying down her sister’s debts has left Emma Strickland with little more than the thrift store suit on her back. And as if the suckfest couldn’t get worse, she’s forced to moonlight as a waitress to support herself and her cat. At a strip club. Her uptight, sexy-as-hell boss Brody Kane can never find out.

Texas property tycoon Brody Kane hired Emma for her spreadsheet skills, but her prim and proper demeanor sealed the deal. There’s no room in his life for a sexy distraction … and yet, he can’t stop lusting after the delicious Ms. Strickland. And then he takes an important client to a Chicago strip club and gets the worst lap dance in adult entertainment history. From Emma.

Now that he knows his office good girl has a naughty streak, Brody makes it his mission to uncover her secrets, one steamy, illicit, over-the-desk encounter at a time. But Emma is hiding more than her side job, and her final secret could end up destroying them both.

Originally from Ireland, Kate

Don’t Miss the First in the Tall, Dark & Texan Series

Taking the Score (Tall, Dark, and Texan #2) by @KittyMeader

Taking the Score (Tall, Dark, and Texan, #2)“You’ve had your hands on my ass and I ground my lady lips into your dick. I think you can call me Emma.”
Shock enlivened his grim features. Had she really just said “lady lips” out loud? This was not their standard repartee around the office.

ARC received from: Netgalley

Rating: 4.5*

Trope: Boss/employee, “stripper”

Chemistry: Off the charts Scorchio

One-Sentence Summary: Brody’s “cat lady” personal assistant becomes his personal sex kitten after an encounter at a strip club.

Review: Another stormer of a book from one of my favourite romance authors.

Contemporary romances are oddly lacking in one of my favourite tropes “rich millionaire rescues down-on-her-luck stripper” so as soon as I heard that the second book in Meader’s Talk, Dark and Texan series combined this trope with an office romance and a strong female lead, I couldn’t wait to get my paws on it.

Boy it didn’t disappoint. Man this book was HAWT! Brody and Kate Meader - BrodyEmma heat up the pages from the moment of their first encounter in the strip club and their chemistry keeps building and building, with plenty of the laughs and banter that I love about this author.

“You chose to do this?”
Indignation rose, swift and sharp. “Why shouldn’t I choose to do this? Is there something wrong with doing this?”
That stymied him. He opened his mouth. Closed it before he shoved his other foot in.
“Every woman who works at this club is choosing to exercise agency over her body and gift the world with her beauty and talent.”
Pure disbelief greeted that. “And the dancing? Was that your gift to the world? Because if so, I hope you kept the receipt.”

I liked the way the “debt” arc was wrapped up and the way that instead of the standard move of  *SPOILER*“oh no I’ve been betrayed, I’m going to brood and leave” when Brody saw the video, he went and dealt with it (boo that Ray got way more money than he deserved) and then declared to Emma that he wasn’t going to let that get in the way of the relationship – even if he did insult her in the process!).*SPOILER*

I absolutely can’t wait for the next book in the series – Flynn/Olivia’s story I presume.
